It’s the last week of February. This is the usual time of the year for the SocialMediaWeekLagos event, and no statement has been issued by the organizers about this year’s edition.

This casts doubt on the likelihood of having the 2021 edition of the event. The reason is obvious — COVID19.

That ordinarily shouldn’t be an issue as there is the option of hosting it as a virtual event, using social media and online platforms like Zoom and @hopin especially since it is a social media event.

In fact, @Africa_nxt, the hosts of SocialMediaWeekLagos did host a virtual event sometime in 2020, so it comes as a bit of surprise that the option is not considered for SocialMediaWeekLagos2021.

It could be other factors at play, ranging from sponsorship issues, to concerns by the SMW franchise.

Or it could be that a date for the event will be announced for a later time in the year or we can just look forward to the 2022 edition already, in hope that the Covid19 vaccine distribution will be properly done, and by February/March 2022, large gatherings should be normal once again.

PS: The 2020 edition had an attendance of 21580 across the week, to its 184 events. It is considered one of the most attended SMW event.

PSS: Social Media Week (SMW) is one of the world’s premier conference for professionals in media, marketing and technology. It is currently hosted in more than 25 cities around the world.
